Top Riesling Wines from Traverse City, Michigan
Ten years ago, I would have told you that I’m not a white wine fan, but that changed when I visited the Finger Lakes in upstate New York. While on that trip, I discovered that Riesling is one of the most versatile grapes in the world. It can be used to make dry wines all the way to sweet desert wines, with luscious versions along the continuum. Today, if you asked me what my favorite wine grape is, I would say Riesling.
When I made my first visit to Traverse City wine country a few years ago, I found so many similarities to the Finger Lakes’ region, with its rolling hills, large lakes, similar climate, and laid-back attitude. It’s no wonder that it’s quickly becoming known for being a great region for growing Riesling in the United States.
Over the Fourth of July weekend this year, I visited both the Leelanau Peninsula and the Old Mission Peninsula to try the latest releases of this cool climate loving varietal. I was pleased to find so many new Rieslings that I loved and in a variety of price ranges. My taste preference for Riesling tends to fall more on the dry side, although if made well, I have been known to appreciate a little residual sugar. I like citrus and acidity, like green apple, lemon, and lime, more than the tropical fruit flavors you find in many Rieslings. If you enjoy a similar style of Riesling, I suggest you try these wines on your next Traverse City wine visit.
